While both Pumpkins After Dark in Borden Park and Deadmonton Haunted House at the old Edmonton Sun building on 50 Street both open Thursday, let’s focus on a number of events happening around Truth and Reconciliation Day and Orange Shirt Day, which is Monday.
First up, Friday and Saturday at Alberta Avenue Community League (9210 118 Ave.), is nâtawihowin ᓈᑕᐃᐧᐦᐅᐃᐧᐣ Healing Medicine, a showcase of Indigenous arts and culture with a marketplace, live entertainment, silent auctions and more.
Free admission, it runs 4 p.m – 9 p.m Friday, 11 am. – 8 p.m. Saturday.
Then, it’s an all-Indigenous variety show 7:30 p.m. at CO*LAB (9641 102A Ave.) most awesomely called Rezzurgence.
Hosted by Etherea of 1+1=2S, there will be assorted performances by Miz Lavender, An Xia D, Dana, Pheromone Killz, Luna Von Schweetz and Valentine Von Boo — tickets $20 at the door.
On Monday, the Art Gallery of Alberta, The Indigenous Peoples Experience at Fort Edmonton Park and Telus World of Science are all stepping up special events — free admission at AGA, for example, with special programming at Fort Edmonton.
And over at Alberta Aviation Museum (11410 Kingsway Ave.), the free tahto awasis asitakimaw ᑕᐦᑐ ᐊᐋᓸᐢ ᐊᓯᑕᑭᒫᐤ Every Child Matters Traditional Feast & Round Dance starts with a pipe ceremony at 3 p.m., the potluck going from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. Monday.
And over at Kingsway Mall near Entrance 8, Indigital Media’s Survivor Portraits of Residential School survivors is up through Oct. 6, another way to, as IM’s Damian Abrahams puts it, “to connect with our shared past and learn from it.”
Finally, noon Monday, is the third annual Orange Shirt Day Walk/Run over at Kinsmen Sports Centre (9100 Walterdale Hill).
While hundreds already have, there are still adult and Elder spots left to register over at indigenousrunner.com, the $20 fee raising funds for orangshirtday.org and local Indigenous athlete programs.
To quote many of our beautiful and resilient friends, “Hiy hiy!”
The List is published every Thursday. If you have events you’d like amplified or have any corrections or updates, please email [email protected].
